John Balliol

When I was in Scotland we visited Rosslyn Chapel and someone there was talking abour a battle that took place early in the 1300's near there where Balliol led 8,000 Scots against Edward 1 English army of 30,000 and won. Maybe history has painted him wrong for some reason ....At least in the end of his reign he fought back against Longshanks.... or I guess it was a little to late
Mothers side is MacDonald Clan Ranald

On Google Blogger I have a blog called
" Scotland and Other Things "

The full story of the battle is here: The Bloodiest Battle.

Balliol was in France at the time, but the battle was fought in his name (he was the King of Scots at the time) by Sir John Comyn, Sir William Wallace, Sir Symon Fraser, Sir Henry St Clair and others. One of the greatest defeats of any English army in Scotland, yet conveniently it is almost forgotten in the annals of our nation.

The Comyns have been written out of history as baddies too - but Comyn was at Wallace's side at Falkirk when Bruce was skulking down in Englandshire...

Wasn't it Comyn who sent a letter to Edward betraying Bruce's plans re. the throne. Did not Bruce intercept the messenger at the borders and read Comyn's letter which betrayal led to Bruce killing Comyn at Dumfries?

So legend has it - there's no actual documentary proof of it that I know of though. I suspect it was one of those tales made up afterwards to justify Bruce killing Comyn... history being written by the victors has a lot going for it, just look at the way the Jacobites were portrayed after the Risings... I think that Bruce's supporters were indulging in a bit of spin of their own there, personally, though ultimately the two families had been rivals for many years.
